Natural Light: Usually lit by a large window; natural light is soft, uniform, and tends to give a clean and polished look. The first 8 samples are from an elementary school that wanted quick portraits of every graduating 6th grader with a backdrop that was undeniably an educational environment. These are 8 of the 57 students photographed. The other 4 examples were taken in rooms with varying size windows and a uniform backdrop. (Please click photo to view larger version)
Studio Lighting Kits: Lighting kits are a bit more cumbersome to set up, but provide great control and consistency. Studio lighting kits allow you to manipulate the overall mood and tone of the photos; ranging from dark contrast to soft light. The first 10 samples are taken indoors, whether in a studio or in an office setting. The last 2 were taken on-location with a portable lighting kit.
Ambient Light: Ambient light is simply using what light is available. The 8 samples below are from a customer who wanted quick portraits of her newest staff members to frame and showcase in their guest lounge. Some spaces have much better light to make portraits than others, but generally, overhead lamps are a bit less consistent and provide a little bit of shadowy contrast.
